Parenting is one of the most valuable but difficult roles. we have to wear lots of different hats. There is no handbook, it can feel daunting and give us a sense of being lost with all the different ideas of what society says parenting should look like. Not to mention the guilt and shame that can be felt if we don’t meet ours or others expectations.

Family life can become overwhelming very quickly if for example you are parenting as a childhood trauma survivor, or:

  • Your child received a recent diagnosis?

  • There has been a health emergencies within your family?

  • Your child is struggling with their mental health, perhaps self harming? feeling suicidal?

  • Your child’s behaviour has escalated beyond what you feel able to cope with?

  • Separation may be impacting your family?

What can Parent Counselling help with:

  • Giving you a space to share your thoughts and feelings without judgement, or feeling a burden.

  • Understanding your needs and those of your child.

  • Building a stronger sense of who you are and the parts you play.

  • Developing communication skills.

  • Creating healthier coping strategies.

  • Processing of and reducing the impact of trauma.

  • Building trust.

  • Managing Conflict and developing assertiveness.

  • Forming new ways of parenting that benefit you and your child/children

Children need help to develop self regulation because it is a skill they are taught through modelling of behaviour, by watching their parents and other key people in their lives. So by taking time for yourself and being able to model how you manage your feelings you will be supporting their emotional growth and development.

It’s never too late to start processing how you feel so you can teach yourself and your child new ways of coping and building resilience.

Home can become a calmer and happier environment to be in for everyone, and that process starts with you.
